We offer an EAL stream at our school. Our specialist EAL teachers assist our learners with the framework needed to become proficient English users:
- Provides intensive instruction in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending English.
- Uses the academic and cultural experience of the student as a platform to provide the appropriate instruction in English.
- Teaches language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies using strategies and methodologies appropriate for second language acquisition.
What is the purpose of Austin School’s EAL programme?
- Develops competence in English.
- Prepare new learners of English to excel in subjects taught in English. This will also allow them to become more successful in their future international studies.
- Prepares students to be successful in all academic subjects.
How is our EAL programme different from our regular programme?
- Teachers are appropriately certified to teach EAL.
- Materials are designed to help students learn through proven methods.
- Instruction focuses on learning English for effective participation in other classes.
Special Educational Needs (SEN)
The term is used to describe learning challenges or disabilities that make it significantly harder for pupils to learn or access education than most others of the same age. SEN children may have problems with schoolwork, communication and/or behaviour. They need some extra help and individualised support.
- Austin School is an inclusive school aiming to maximise students’ learning potential and motivation as well as self-concept. This is achieved by delivering effective and appropriate individualised programmes and teaching strategies which address every learner’s unique needs in a safe, positive, stimulating yet challenging learning environment.
- Our whole-school approach to SEN provision offers every student the greatest opportunity of succeeding in their learning. This means employing best SEN practices, including effective, differentiated teaching techniques and pedagogies.
- The Special Education Team (SET) works collaboratively with teaching staff to design and deliver IEPs (Individual Education Plans) and ILPs (Individual Learning Plans) as well as Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSPs) according to the students’ capabilities, needs and learning styles, in order to improve their academic achievement, language and other developmental skills.
- The SET also supports class and subject teachers and other teaching staff in personalising and modifying curriculum, instructions, learning materials and assessments, ensuring the additional needs of every pupil are successfully met. The SEN specialist also offers training and workshops for teaching staff on areas of SEN.
- The SET builds collaborative partnerships with all stakeholders, including regularly updating student progress with parents and liaising with other professionals from external agencies for assessment and service referral.
PASTORAL CARE
At Austin School, pastoral care is an essential part of our community. For children to achieve their best, they must be provided with an environment of trust, care and support. This will allow them to succeed as they feel happy and at home when at school.
Our weekly Physical, Social Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons are led by our school’s pastoral team and are designed to focus on developing the skills, knowledge, and attributes to keep our students safe and prepare them for later in life.
